Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about the Unix Timestamp Converter.
Back to the toolWhat is a Unix timestamp?
It is the number of seconds since 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC (the Unix epoch). It is used by servers, databases and APIs to store time.
Seconds or milliseconds?
A 10-digit number is seconds (PHP, MySQL, Unix). A 13-digit number is milliseconds (JavaScript Date.now()). The converter detects this automatically.
Does a timestamp have a timezone?
No. A timestamp is always UTC. It is only shown in a timezone when converted to a date.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems that store timestamps as signed 32-bit numbers overflow on 19 January 2038. Modern 64-bit systems are not affected.
How do I get the current timestamp in PHP?
Use time() for seconds, or round(microtime(true) * 1000) for milliseconds. The tool shows snippets for other languages too.
